ABOUT
GINESTAS AND SURROUNDING AREA
Ginestas is in the extreme south-east of the Minervois in the
territory known as "Les Serres". It sits close to the
crossroads of the two major road axes which cross the Minervois :
St. Pons to Narbonne and Béziers to
Carcassonne. Ginestas has its
own coat of arms displaying a branch of broom in gold under the
royal Fleur de Lys. The name of Ginestas comes from the Latin for
the flowering shrub known in English as ‘broom’. Early reference
to its name dates from 955.
|
 |
It is
1.5km from Le Somail, the port of Ginestas, on the Canal du Midi
(constructed during the mid 1600's and now a UNESCO world heritage
site), which harbours lots of house boats, and boats to rent: Also
in the village is a huge second hand book shop; art shops, restaurants,
a café, and a hat museum.
To the north, a mere 20 minutes drive is Minerve which straddles
two river gorges, and is the site of an infamous siege of Simon
de Montford's that resulted in the burning of heretic Cathars. The
famous red wine of the region resonates the potent mix of history
and dramatic landscape of garrigue and gorges.
