Located 14 km
from the Mediterranean Sea, Béziers is situated on a hill overlooking the river
Orb.
Capital of the Languedoc wine industry, it is also noted for bullfights and
rugby. Béziers, established about 36BC and surmounted by the 13-14th
century Cathedral of Saint Nazaire, is the birthplace of the extraordinary man,
Pierre-Paul Riquet (1604-80) who designed and built the
Canal du Midi. In Béziers it is perhaps the best known engineering feature
of Riquet’s canal, the eight lock staircase of Fonserannes, rising 13.6 metres.
The top of the cathedral’s tower affords an impressive view of the aqueduct
carrying the canal over the river and the surrounding vine covered countryside.
There is a large flower market in
Béziers that is held on
Fridays.
